This Thursday evening we are opening one of our regular classes to the wider community.

In the 17th century, questions about the end of the world did not remain in the study. Prophetic expectation shaped sermons before Parliament, fuelled political movements, inspired mission, and in some cases led people into the streets with weapons. Churches had to decide how much certainty they would claim about the future, and how much restraint.

This lecture looks at how one group of pastors responded. They held firmly to the clear biblical teaching on death, resurrection, judgement, and the return of Christ, while refusing to turn disputed prophetic schemes into tests of faithfulness. The result was a posture of disciplined longing rather than calculation: certainty where Scripture speaks, silence where it does not, and the final prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

Dr. Craig Ireland will explore the historical setting and the lasting practical implications for how Christians think about history and the last things.
